Unmanned Aerial Systems are truly passionate about the issue of Rhino poaching, and feel very strongly that these acts must be stopped. We are thus driven to developing a true long-term solution and are developing UAVs to meet the need. In terms of requirements and scenarios presented, as well as independent interviews conducted.

The concepts of operations requires (CONOPS) two UAVs to meet the anti-poaching needs:

• Operational focussed UAV
• Tactical focussed UAV

The operational focussed UAV capabilities are as follows:
• Man portable (backpack) unit, suitable for patrols, to provide directly support the rangers anti-poaching operations, and animal and habitat research
• Requires little infrastructure to support ongoing operations in the field
• Operate from where the rangers require it
• Provide immediate and localised situational awareness to the rangers
• Simple visual payload capability
• Provide both day and night capability
• Operate in adverse weather conditions
• Operate both mist and smoke conditions
• 1-2 hours of flight time
• Slow speed highly manoeuvrable
• Range 3-10 km
• Robust unit
• Designed for ease of transport
• Simply construction
• Low acquisition cost
• Low maintenance cost
• Easy maintenance
• Elementary to launch and recover
• Easily damaged parts are replaceable at low cost
• Ruggedized and weather proof sensors and camera payload
• Good forward flight in strong winds
• Low vibration and noise
• Autonomous flight control systems that will allow the aircraft to operate independent of constant control commands
• Electrically powered
• Visually and Audibly stealthy
• Communications relay capability between GCS and multiple other aircraft.
• Systems and operator procedures to meet future Civil Aviation Authority safety requirements.

The tactical focussed UAV capabilities are as follows:
• A tactical type aircraft for environmental management, river erosion, research, animal surveys, high-level anti-poacher patrols, and ranger support
• Vehicle portable
• Operate from central or forward patrol bases
• Requires little infrastructure to support ongoing operations at a base or from a vehicle
• Capable of VTOL as well as conventional Take Off and Landing
• Provides ‘Perch and Stare’ capability where the UAV can land and then observe the activity in the area from the ground, thus consuming a minimum of power
• Provide quick situational awareness to the rangers and headquarters staff
• Provide sophisticated and capable payload support
• Provide both day and night capability
• Operate in adverse weather conditions
• Operate in mist and smoke conditions
• Robust unit
• Easy to transport
• Simply construction
• Low acquisition cost
• Low maintenance cost
• Easy maintenance
• Ruggedized and weather proof sensors and camera payloads
• Electrically powered

• Systems and operator procedures designed to meet future CAA safety requirements.

A tactical type aircraft for high-level patrols and ground surveys. This aircraft is a joined wing design and is capable of a VTOL or conventional take off and landing. The aircraft is very robust and strong with low drag characteristics and unique control capability. It is vehicle transportable but it can be carried by a single person for short periods of time. The Autopilot flies the aircraft based on the initial inputting of flight data or waypoints. The autopilot provides stable flight and is controllable from the fixed GCS or through the Mobile ranger controlled GCS. Manual override of the Autopilot is possible.
Many safety features from both a system and an operator perspective are provided. The larger size and weight class of this aircraft and the fact that it is a fixed wing design provides for a substantially greater range and endurance, and will feature more payload capability and provide a more persistent level of surveillance. The main payloads are highly ruggedized and weatherproof. The aircraft has twin electric motors and is visually and audibly stealthy. The aircraft is capable of relaying information between GCS and multiple other aircraft. The aircraft is designed for operation in adverse environmental conditions.
This aircraft is a precision and technological advanced piece of equipment therefore standard and regular maintenance procedures will always be a required. The multiple UAVs are all designed to communicate with each other, and thus provide additional operational and tactical value. Large and more diverse operational areas can be covered more quickly.
